Interact serves community
By Alina Editor-in-Chief
Interact is the perfect club for any student interested in helping others. Interact takes part in numerous amounts of volunteer activities each school year. According to Ms. Holtzman, a sponsor of the club, Interact is an important organization because it is “always nice for students to get out and get involved in the community. Interact gives students a chance to do that.”
Holtzman added, “Community service is not just about helping others but helping yourself become a better person.”
One notable aspect of volunteering is that it is fulfilling work that can be fun. Some Interact activities include helping Student Government with the Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon, bell ringing for Salvation Army, involvement with Susan G. Komen breast cancer organization, and holding the 2nd annual Locks of Love. What makes volunteering so enjoyable is that friends can join volunteers in the volunteer effort. Ms. Zoccole, another sponsor of the club, commented that students should be involved with Interact because it helps students become, “an active citizen in the community.”
Fortunately for students who are not members of the club, they are always welcomed to help for any of the volunteering event. Non-members can volunteer, but this does not make them members of the Interact because the school has a roster of the active members.
Interact is different from other clubs according to Holtzman because it is, “one of the few volunteer organizations that can help students become responsible citizens by helping their community.”
Many students may not realize that many of their teachers help with this club. The official sponsor of the club is Mrs. Nese, who is on maternity leave. Ms. Holtzman is filling in Mrs. Nese’s position currently but other teachers include Ms. Pounds and Ms. Zoccole. The president of the club is Junior Sam Kuchta. Kuchta stated that what makes Interact so enjoyable is, “helping people always gives you very good satisfaction about yourself and there are a lot of people that need help and it is very to good to help a few of those people.”
Kupta also mentioned that “anyone who can should volunteer.”
If any student has questions, additional ideas, or concerns regarding Interact, feel free to contact the club at BHSInteract@wiu.k12.pa.us.
Interact is an important part of Burrell High and students should take part in helping make Burrell a better community.
